5 Songs That Totally Get Me

Top 5 Tuesday: Songs that make me feel seen.

You know that old adage about cameras stealing your soul? Well, these songs nail the essence of who I am on the inside of my person.

No. 5: I've Just Seen A Face from Help! My brother, who is 8 years my senior, made sure I had a music education. He turned me onto The Beatles, Blondie & the B-52s (among others). I was a Beatles fanatic about 10yrs too late. My room was covered in Beatles pictures, I had a lunch box, and I was an avid fan of the movies, especially 'Help!' Every song on it is a gem. My favorite off that album is "I've Just Seen A Face." It's peppy, romantic, and totally me.

No. 4: Blackwater by The Doobie Brothers. I remember singing this song when I was 5. I was living in Richardson, Texas and rollerskating with those pointless metal skates on city sidewalks. I loved this song for the harmonies – and because I thought they were talking about Disneyland.

Turns out it was DIXIE land.

No. 3: Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head. According to my mom’s journal, I knew all the lyrics to this song when I was two and sang it all the time. It makes a special appearance in my first novel “Too Much Heaven.” This song also appears in one of my all-time favorite movies - to be named in a future Top 5. Wait for it...

No. 2: I Can See Clearly Now (The Rain Is Gone). I don't know what it is about this song. I think it might be the accordion that always made me think of a far off fantastical place. This song is my Narnia.

No. 1: Vivaldi's Concerto in D M, RV 93 (Largo). I was 5 and watching Sesame Street. I didn't know the name of the song, but the image & music stuck with me. I was in my late 30s before I found out what it was. Here's the song & the clip! And here's a longer story I wrote about. That's how much it means to me.
